WATERBURY—An effort to reconstruct the city’s giant glowing cross received a boost last week when Greenwich residents Ned and Annie Lamont offered to contribute $25,000 to the cause, the project’s construction manager announced Friday.

Ned Lamont, who challenged U.S. Sen. Joe Lieberman for his Senate seat two years ago, has offered to match up to $25,000 in donations made through June 30, Branford-based O,R&L Construction Co. said in a statement.

The company plans to take the cross down from its spot atop Pine Hill some time this month and replace it with a new one in March.

Since the 50-foot cross was erected by a group called Catholic Crusaders in 1958, it has become one of the city’s most spiritual and recognizable landmarks. Its site, a former theme park called Holy Land USA, is now maintained by the Religious Teachers Filippini, an order of Catholic nuns with a residence next to the site.
