Ned Lamont and I come from the business world—where results matter and no one considers it a good day’s work to have just poked the other side in the eye and gotten nothing done. That’s now how it is right now in Washington . Ned Lamont gets it. Washington needs an entrepreneurial approach, Washington needs Ned Lamont.
As Ned wrote in a Wall Street Journal op-ed:
First, entrepreneurs are frugal beasts, because the bottom line means everything. In Connecticut , voters are convinced that Washington has utterly lost touch with fiscal reality. We talked about irresponsible budget policies that have driven the annual federal deficit above $300 billion and the debt ceiling to $9 trillion …Second, entrepreneurs invest in human resources … It’s getting harder and harder for American businesses to compete on price, but we innovate and change better than any economy on the planet. The quality of our work force is one of America ’s competitive advantages—if our education system fails our children and our employers, we’ll lose the future.
That’s the approach we took in Virginia —where we reformed the way government does business to achieve long term savings, and reformed our tax code to make it fairer and to be able to keep our commitments and invest in our future.
Ned Lamont’s business-like approach is also his world view. He calls for a return to an American foreign policy that unites our friends and divides our enemies — and a call that will inevitably sweep through November’s elections.
As Ned wrote in that same op-ed:
We start with the strongest, best-trained military in the world, and we’ll keep it that way … Good judgment is an essential part of good governance. But we’re bogged down in Iraq , and hamstrung in the war against terror, by leaders who lacked judgment, historical perspective, openness to other cultures and plain old common sense. We offer something different.
I agree that we need a plan to get out of Iraq —and real action to make us safer. Most alarmingly this week, the latest National Intelligence Estimate concludes “that the American invasion and occupation of Iraq has helped spawn a new generation of Islamic radicalism and that the overall terrorist threat has grown since the Sept. 11 attacks.” Think about it.
The current Republican leadership isn’t making us safer – or any more prepared to compete in a global economy. As a successful entrepreneur, Ned Lamont knows how to do both. It’s time for congressional leadership that will stand up to the current administration and move America forward. It’s time to put Ned Lamont in the U.S. Senate.
Let’s help Ned get it done,
Mark Warner
